What Makes You Feel Hot?

What Makes You Feel Hot?

It sounds like an easy question until you actually try to answer it. Maybe you know immediately. Maybe you have three answers and they make absolutely no sense together. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve thought about it at all.

We started asking because “What makes you feel hot?” gets somewhere different than “What makes you feel confident?” Hot can be incredibly specific. It might be the jeans you’ve owned forever, freshly washed hair, being really good at your job, a particular song in the car, flirting with someone you’ve known for twenty years, or catching yourself in a mirror and thinking, oh, okay.

And nobody else has to understand it.

Hot is weirdly specific

Most of us have something that changes the way we carry ourselves almost immediately. It might be an outfit, but it could just as easily be making someone laugh, getting back from a great workout, speaking another language, dancing, cooking without a recipe, or walking into a room where you know exactly who you are.

Then there are the things so particular they’re almost impossible to explain. Your hair on day two, never day one. The lighting in one restaurant. The sunglasses that make you feel approximately 40 percent more interesting. The song you would never voluntarily put on at a party but absolutely need while getting ready.

There’s no universal formula here, which is exactly why the question is so good. What makes one woman feel hot might do absolutely nothing for another.

And yes, feeling hot matters

There are stretches of life when feeling hot barely makes the list. You’re working, studying for your LSAT, making decisions, getting through a hard season, or simply busy being a person. It’s surprisingly easy to go a long time without thinking about yourself in that particular way.

Which may be why it can feel so good when it shows up again after a few months off.

Feeling hot isn’t quite the same as feeling beautiful or confident. There’s an energy to it. You’re aware of yourself, in your body, and enjoying being there. Sometimes desire is part of it. Sometimes it’s liking what you see in the mirror. Sometimes it’s an inexplicable swagger on a completely ordinary Wednesday that changes the mood of the entire day.

Your answer might surprise you

The things that make us feel hot also change. Something that reliably did it at 25 might not register now, while something you never would have considered back then suddenly does.

Maybe attention used to be part of the equation and now being completely in your own world feels better. Or the reverse. Maybe what once made you feel hot was mostly about how you looked, and now it’s just as likely to be how you feel when you’re doing something you’re exceptionally good at.

Please don’t turn it into homework

The minute something makes us feel good, wellness culture has a remarkable ability to turn it into a practice. This does not need to become one.

You don’t need to identify your five hotness triggers and incorporate them into your morning routine. Your answers can be contradictory, shallow, sexy, funny, sentimental, inexplicable, or entirely dependent on the day. You can feel hot with a bare face on Tuesday and fully dressed up on Saturday. You can love being noticed and love not caring whether anyone notices.

The question is interesting precisely because there’s nothing to accomplish afterward. It’s simply worth knowing what brings that particular feeling out in you.
